About Cedar Key image

Cedar Key is a collection of islands just 50 miles west of Gainesville and situated for spectacular sunsets on the Florida’s Gulf of Mexico. A quaint fishing village that has been able to preserve its’ charm, this town now is being rediscovered for its unique mix of natural resources, amenities and affordability. Its’ natural beauty and tranquility have become a harbor for many artists and writers who find inspiration in the alluring landscape.

A great place to unwind, Cedar Key also has many activities for the nature lover. Local boat charters or the public piers offer excellent fishing. Bird watchers will enjoy teeming wildlife around the islands and shouldn’t miss the opportunity to take an air boat tour during low tide. The local marina and deep water harbor make sailing or boating an easy option.

The islands are also unique in that they are served by a county owned 2500 foot landing strip. Free to the public, there is also plenty of parking for your single or twin engine plane or your helicopter. Kayakers will enjoy the salt marshes and one local resident can be seen in her 20 foot scull. Surrounding the main island are a number of smaller public islands that offer excellent white sand beaches and are easily accessible by boat.

After a great day biking around the island or playing in the sun, you can enjoy local art galleries, restaurants, or some of the best sunsets in Florida. The weekends will often bring live music and great food. Don’t miss the annual “Cedar key Seafood Festival” or the “old Florida Celebration of the Arts in Cedar Key.”
